I realize I’m coming late, fashionably late, to Substack but there’s something to be said for joining a party already in full swing. With more platforms, creators, and digital content available than ever before, it’s hard not to feel overwhelmed by the influx of information and product recommendations.
As a former Fashion Director for a luxury retailer who spent a decade closely following and analyzing trends, I can relate to the urge to buy what’s new while anticipating what’s next. But this cycle is exhausting and expensive, and once the initial thrill wears off, most impulse or influenced purchases lead to a bad case of buyers' remorse. I’m a careful shopper, but I’ve learned that sometimes the coveted product ultimately doesn’t feel very me, and other times it makes me look just like everybody else – the opposite of my goal.
It was only when I tuned out the noise that I was able to identify exactly what I wanted my fashion choices to communicate about me to the world: hopefully confidence, sophistication, playfulness, and on a good day, optimism. Once I realized that my best purchases were the ones that made me feel original and authentic, I started shopping with more intention, dressing to impress –and express– myself.
There is certainly no shortage of quality shopping recommendations and styling tips from people far more “in-the-know” and influential than I am. Chances are you already know who makes the best white t-shirt, comfortable yet stylish loafers, and flattering-fit denim. You have a cart full of spring's most exciting new arrivals just waiting to be checked out. That’s why I was reluctant to launch my own newsletter and add to the noise. But whenever I post a look, I receive so many link requests and styling questions that I realized I might actually have something to contribute to this platform.
I understand the allure of making a grand entrance and expressing individuality. That’s exactly what my friends, family, followers and even strangers on social media are seeking when they reach out to me for fashion advice. They’re most interested in the one-of-a-kind, vintage, and conversation-starting statement pieces I’ve found, or the outfits that were inspired by an old movie I’ve watched, or a book I’ve read. They’re also curious about where I shop when I’m at home, or when I’m away on an off-the-beaten-path trip. Where can they find that special something that sets them apart from everyone else?
When it comes to newsletters, you’ve got your basics covered, so what you'll find here will be the elevating extras. Because it’s not always about being first, or new. Whenever you find something that inspires you, however (fashionably) late, it’s right on time.
So what can you expect to find here? A carefully curated selection of products, thoughtful recommendations, and styling tips that will ensure you stand out from the crowd. The theme and format of each post will look a little different but will always include:
One-of-a-finds: Vintage, artisan-crafted, special pieces that transcend trends.
Ones that got away: Selection of second-hand and resale pieces that are worth revisiting.
The Latest: A roundup of new,(or new-to you) things to do, see, read and shop!
Yes finally! The content we need!
